Hi there, we’re Nick and Guy—two education PhDs who are not the kind of doctors who can save you in a medical emergency, but we can help you navigate the wild world of academia, professional life, and everything in between.
So why did we create this space? After years of climbing the academic ladder, shifting institutions, mentoring students, and just trying to stay whelmed, we realized that there’s a whole lot of academic advice out there—but most of it feels like it’s wrapped in jargon or just plain unhelpful. We wanted to cut through the noise and give you something real: practical, no-nonsense guidance about the ups, downs, and weird sideways moves that come with pursuing advanced degrees and surviving the academic life.
At Not That Kind of Doctor, we’re here for the real talk. We’ll cover everything from how to handle imposter syndrome to balancing teaching, research, and life (without losing your mind). Whether you’re a grad student, an early career academic, or someone just thinking about what life post-degree looks like, we’re here to help you figure it all out—minus the fluff.
Our goal? To make navigating academia feel just a little less overwhelming. Along the way, we’ll laugh, we’ll vent, and we’ll offer up some of the lessons we’ve learned (sometimes the hard way) about how to thrive both in and out of the ivory tower.
